Feel the Skin: Rules to Identify Real Leather Shoes

Hey guys! Hope the rains aren’t messing too much with you or your style.

So, a few days back I got completely drenched in rain and I felt genuinely scared for my leather shoes because of how everybody keeps talking about protecting leather from water. Anyway, I also knew that real leather can absorb water. So in case your leather shoes get wet like mine, just give it some time and it will soak it all up. However, that day my shoes didn’t! So strange! Got me thinking if my ‘’leather’’ shoes were at all leather or not. And after some research I realized that I had been fooled into buying faux leather! All this while I had been thinking my shoes to be made of ‘’real leather’’, which is durable and can withstand wear and tear.

Anyway, just so you guys don’t make a similar mistake, I decided to share my research with you in this blog. The word ‘’genuine leather’’ can be very deceptive. Nowadays, every brand puts a tag that says their products are made of genuine leather. But, that doesn’t always mean it is 100% animal hide!

So, firstly look for a detailed description of the material used and read it thoroughly before buying. Look for words like full-grain leather, top-grain leather, cowhide leather, which indicate that the leather is real.

Feel your shoes:

Like seriously, touch the leather. It is skin and actually functions like real skin. It ages like skin and develops folds, wrinkles and a lot of character over time! So, your leather may feel smooth or rough at times, but never ever like plastic. If it does feel plastic-y to touch- turn your back on it.

Smell your shoes:

Yes, you heard me right. Real leather has a distinct smell, which you learn to recognize over time. Have you ever entered a real-leather goods shop and gotten a tangy smell? That smell is like an authentication mark for leather products.

Lastly, real leather products are costly. You can’t help that. But, it’s every bit worth it. It will last for years, believe me. Prince Charles still wears a pair of burgundy leather brogues he bought in 1971! Take care of them and they will serve you for decades.
